However, the analysis reveals disparities between companies: some are reducing their emissions by more than half, while a few are also on a downward yet slower trend. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater action is needed from the laggards to get in phase with the new normal of avoiding business travel which in Germany has seen a steep decline since the pandemic, with a 44% drop in 2024 compared to 2019, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UK9in-lxlTA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deutsche Reiseverband<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T&amp;E&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/library\/corporate-travel-reduced-by-a-third-on-2019-levels-despite-increased-flying-by-merck-bosch-and-jpmorgan-chase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the 2025 Travel Smart Ranking shows that companies with specific business travel targets are more effective in reducing their emissions. Of the nine companies <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[2] covered in the current analysis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only one &#8211; Allianz &#8211; has set specific targets for reducing their business travel emissions. Eight have either no target at all, or only a broader reduction target that includes many of the company&#8217;s activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, insurance company Allianz has established a clear target to reduce business travel emissions by 2030, and achieved a leading 60% reduction between 2019 and 2024 while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz.com\/content\/dam\/onemarketing\/azcom\/Allianz_com\/sustainabilityreport\/2024\/Allianz-SE-Sustainability-Report-2024-short-version.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implementing measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as promoting digital collaboration and other low-carbon alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sectors such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/library\/business-travel-emissions-by-major-global-consulting-firms-down-by-46-compared-with-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consulting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where travel is responsible for a sizable share of company emissions, are leading in emissions reductions. These sector dynamics extend to a global firm without a specific target, SAP, thanks to measures including investing in virtual collaboration and communication technologies, and charging a carbon price on business flights to incentivise employees to fly less or choose a more sustainable alternative mode of travel instead, according to their latest response to the CDP questionnaire.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemical giant BASF, which has not set any target, has seen its travel emissions return to only 12% below 2019 levels in 2024. The manufacturing company Adidas, with a broader reduction target, is in a similar situation (-10%)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18996\" src=\"http:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EN-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EN-1.png 768w, https:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EN-1-209x300.png 209w, https:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EN-1-715x1024.png 715w, https:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EN-1-8x12.png 8w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decline is likely driven by a shift in how German companies approach business travel. Virtual collaboration tools are viewed as convenient and effective ways for holding meetings. Where physical travel is necessary, companies are increasingly opting for more sustainable alternatives, such <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UK9in-lxlTA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as rail<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where 82% of German business travelers choose the train for door-to-door journeys of up to three hours &#8211; and would likely do so even more often if <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/library\/business-travellers-and-environmental-organisations-across-europe-call-upon-german-government-and-political-decision-makers-to-ramp-up-rail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German rail services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were to become more reliable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reductions in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/table.media\/en\/climate\/feature\/domestic-flights-decline-reduces-greenhouse-gas-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel expenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and growing environmental awareness among travel managers and employees are also key factors. Indeed, 63.5% of European respondents in the latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnews.com\/Sustainable-Business-Travel\/2025\/The-Current-State-of-Play\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BTN 2025 Sustainability Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentioned climate concerns as a major influence on their travel decisions. Finally, many companies are also motivated by the need to comply with regulations such as the EU\u2019s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), with 52% of companies in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnews.com\/Sustainable-Business-Travel\/2025\/The-Current-State-of-Play\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referenced report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> naming this as a reason for pursuing business travel emissions reductions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T&amp;E and the Travel Smart campaign call on German companies to set specific targets to reduce business travel emissions by at least 50% compared to 2019 levels, between 2025 and 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suggested target has been set on the basis of T&amp;E&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/articles\/2050roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roadmap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shows that a 50% reduction in corporate travel emissions is necessary by 2030, in order to keep aviation on a trajectory compatible with a 1.5\u00b0C planet [3].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Notes to editor<\/span>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[1] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Includes companies covered in the Travel Smart Ranking, with actual or estimated air travel emissions of between 50,000 and 350,000 tons CO2 in 2019, and having comparable data for 2019 and 2024. Thanks to the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/travelsmartcampaign.org\/policy-developments\/corporate-sustainability-reporting-directive-csrd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSRD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), many companies now disclose their business travel emissions in their annual reports, allowing them to be assessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[3] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, the European aviation sector almost fully bounced back to pre-COVID levels, reaching 96% of 2019 flight numbers and 98% of CO2 emissions, according to T&amp;E&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/te-france\/articles\/laviation-europeenne-emet-presque-autant-de-co2-quavant-le-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
