De Amerikaanse federale overheid heeft op 14 december 2023 een nieuwe reeks eisen vrijgegeven om de klimaatvoetafdruk van de reizen die door haar federale medewerkers worden gerealiseerd te verkleinen. De vereisten omvatten onder meer een verschuiving naar treinreizen. Het heeft de volgende regel vastgelegd: federale werknemers zullen voor reizen van minder dan 250 mijl (ongeveer 400 km) het spoor gebruiken als dit kosteneffectief en beschikbaar is, in plaats van een vliegtuig of voertuig te nemen. Het omvat bijvoorbeeld de reis tussen Washington en New York, waar reizen met de trein 92% minder CO2-eq-uitstoot uitstoot dan vliegen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De VS sluiten zich aan bij een team van vooruitstrevende landen (Zwitserland, Frankrijk, Nederland) die ook het reizen per spoor voor hun ambtenaren stimuleren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De Amerikaanse overheid eist ook van de federale werknemers dat ze meer elektrische auto\u2019s en openbaar vervoer gebruiken als ze lokaal reizen. <\/span><\/p>\n
