Rail travel

Rail travel offers an effective way to move from air to greener transport. Companies can drive this change by adopting a clear rail travel policy that encourages employees to take the train to make travel productive and comfortable.

Travelling by rail rather than by air significantly reduces travel emissions. A train journey from London to Amsterdam cuts emissions by 93%, while travelling by train from Frankfurt to Berlin reduces emissions by 79%.

Over the past three years, leading businesses have transformed their approach to work-related travel by introducing clear rail travel policies that encourage employees to choose trains for meetings and events. These policies include measures such as prioritising rail over air travel for journeys below a certain distance or duration and the possibility to book first class tickets to allow employees to be more comfortable on the train.

Major global event organisers, including UEFA and the World Economic Forum, have also encouraged participants to travel sustainably, including by train. Certain football teams and top executives are setting the example by opting for the train instead of commercial flights or private jets.
