After facing criticism for hosting the Euros across multiple countries, UEFA moved to cluster group-stage matches in order to reduce the amount of travel required for teams and fans.
The two most recent tournaments were held in Germany and Switzerland, where rail operators Deutsche Bahn and SBB partnered with UEFA to make train travel easier and more accessible across each country.
But there’s more that can—and should—be done. T&E’s Travel Smart campaign and a group of partner organisations called upon UEFA to go further by requiring teams to travel by train or coach to and within the host country when trips are below a certain distance or duration.
