Several MEPs from the Greens/European Free Alliance have urged the European Commission to introduce a temporary EU-wide ban on non-essential private jet travel amidst the conflict in Iran and the Gulf.
This conflict has triggered the largest supply disruption in global oil market history, as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly ground to a halt. This loss of oil supply is driving up costs and increasing the risk of shortages.
In light of this, the Green MEPs argue that permitting the unchecked use of private jets highlights a stark injustice.
The group of MEPs is pressing the Commission and EU countries for immediate action, specifically:
- Introducing a temporary ban on non-essential private jet flights during the energy crisis;
- Restricting private jet arrivals and refueling from non-EU countries;
- Establishing strict criteria defining essential use, limited to emergencies, medical needs, and critical government functions.
The European Commission has acknowledged the letter and indicated that a response will be provided “in due course.
