Taxation

Scotland will tax private jets from 2028

Scottish Government
January 2026

The Scottish Government will also introduce their own distance-based flight tax starting in April 2027.

The proposed taxes include:

  • £7 per economy-class passenger on UK flights
  • £13 on international flights up to 2,000 miles
  • Up to £90 for flights up to 5,500 miles

Private jet passengers will face significantly higher rates from April 2027

  • £84 in the first two distance bands, rising to £142
  • £647 in the longest distance band, increasing to £1,097

This tax will stay in the 2028–29 budget and the UK Government plans to give Scotland more power to tackle private jet “ghost flights” (flights with no passengers).
